English and Scottish Ballads, Volume I

These are the oldest English and Scottish folk songs in their rawest form, preserved from centuries of oral tradition by scholar Francis James Child. They come from a world where love could kill, the dead returned to warn the living, and enchanted forests held secrets no mortal was meant to know. This volume contains the foundational tales that would later inspire Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and generations of poets: the doomed romance of "Barbara Allen," the fairy abduction of "Tam Lin," the prophetic visions of "Thomas the Rhymer," the doomed fidelity of "Earl Brand" and "Fair Margaret and Sweet William." These aren't gentle nursery rhymes. They're visceral, often violent, always uncanny verses where loyalty is tested past breaking point, where promises made in darkness must be kept at dawn, where supernatural beings operate by their own merciless logic. To read them is to hear the voice of the common people of Britain singing tales that predate written history, preserving them in memory because the stories mattered too much to forget. For anyone who wants to find where English-language literature actually begins.
