Enchiridion Militis Christiani (English)

Written in 1501 by the most influential humanist of the Northern Renaissance, this short but explosive treatise argues that religion of the heart matters far more than religion of rote observance. Erasmus directly challenged the outward righteousness of his age, insisting that true Christian living flows not from ceremonies and external forms but from an inward alignment with Jesus's plain teaching and common sense. William Tyndale's 1533 English translation brought this radical message to English readers, and Tyndale would later pay with his life for his biblical work. The book reads less like theology than like a friend's urgent counsel: practical, direct, unafraid to name the gap between what Christians profess and how they actually live. It helped ignite the spiritual restlessness that would soon become the Reformation itself. For readers curious about where modern Western Christianity's emphasis on personal faith and direct scripture reading actually began, this is the source.
