Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declared the freedom of all slaves in ten states not under Union control during the American Civil War. This pivotal document marked a significant shift in the war's objectives, making the abolition of slavery a military goal. Lincoln's decision was influenced by the need to undermine the Confederacy and rally support for the Union cause. The Proclamation ultimately led to the liberation of approximately three million slaves in Confederate territories.
