Ellen Walton: Or, the Villain and His Victims

1785 Pittsburgh. At Fleming's Hotel, where strangers gather over whiskey and whispered secrets, a young woman named Eliza Fleming catches the eye of Louis Durant. He is charming, magnetic, and hiding something ancient and dark: a thirst for revenge that has curdled into something like obsession. What begins as a seductive game becomes a trap. Durant's manipulative charms ensnare Eliza in a web of treachery, and his true nature unfolds slowly, revealing a sinister figure bent on destroying a noble heroine. As the threat looms larger, readers are left to wonder: can innocence survive when matched against a villain who knows exactly which heartstrings to pluck? This is American Gothic before the genre had a name, a post-colonial melodrama where the real monsters wear human faces and seek their pound of flesh through love itself.
