Elak must rally a sea-witch, an ancient ally, and a magical talisman forged in forgotten ages before confronting the thing that wears his king's face. The atmosphere drips with Lovecraftian dread while delivering the satisfactions of sword-and-sorcery. Kuttner weaves adventure and cosmic horror into a tight, visceral tale where every victory costs something, and the final battle demands more than blood. This is pulp fantasy at its most literate, where the shadow behind the throne has dimensions human eyes were not made to see.
