Donald Ross of Heimra (volume 2 of 3)

On a remote Scottish island, the arrival of a steamer brings more than cargo, it brings confrontation. Volume two of this forgotten 1891 trilogy finds Donald Ross returning to a community perched between ancient tradition and encroaching authority. At the pier, two men wait and trade whispers of eerie folklore, their conversation threading between the practical and the supernatural before the real storm arrives: Donald Ross himself, bearing news of challenges to the islanders' rights and livelihoods. The novel weaves the intimate dramas of island life with the looming presence of figures like Mr. Purdie, who represent forces that would reshape this community. What emerges is a portrait of ordinary people navigating impossible choices: when tradition collides with authority, when survival demands compromise, when a man's responsibility to his neighbors wars with his own safety. This is regional fiction at its most evocative, a window into a world both vanishing and stubbornly, fiercely resisting.
