Doctor Syn: A Tale of the Romney Marsh, published by Russell Thorndike, is the first novel in the Doctor Syn series, though it is the last chronologically. Set in the small town of Dymchurch near the Romney Marsh, the story follows Christopher Syn, a seemingly kind vicar with a hidden life connected to local smuggling operations. As Captain Howard Collyer, a revenue agent, investigates the area, he encounters supernatural elements and local folklore, including tales of witches and demons. This novel inspired the Disney film 'The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh.'
