Doctor Dolittle in the Moon

What if the Moon is a piece of Earth that broke off eons ago, carrying with it the last traces of a vanished world? Doctor Dolittle arrives to find exactly that: a frozen fragment of ancient Earth, home to Otho Bludge, a Stone Age artist who has lived alone among the stars since his mountain drifted into the sky. The Moon is strange and silent, its extinct volcanoes looming over landscapes that haven't changed in millions of years. But Dolittle discovers something astonishing here: intelligent plants that have been waiting, growing wise in the lunar stillness, for someone who can speak to them. As the animals of the Moon flock to the Doctor, and as he learns the language of these ancient, patient vegetation, he finds himself facing an impossible question. Will the Moon let him leave? Written with the quiet wonder of a bedtime story and the philosophical bent of a fairy tale, this 1928 gem asks what it means to be a stranger in a lost world, and whether curiosity is worth the cost of never going home.
