Diddie, Dumps & Tot; Or, Plantation Child-Life

Published in 1882, this novel captures the world of three white sisters growing up on a Southern plantation in the years before the Civil War. Diddie, Dumps, and Tot wander the grounds of Major Waldron's estate, their days filled with games, superstitions, and lessons learned from the enslaved women who raise them. The book is a repository of African American folk traditions: spirituals, ghost stories, game songs, and oral traditions that Pyrnelle witnessed during her own childhood. Written with a nostalgic yearning for the 'old home,' the novel sits uncomfortably in modern readers' hands, offering genuine ethnographic value alongside a romanticized view of antebellum life. The enslaved characters appear primarily through the children's eyes, rendering them as nurturers and storytellers rather than fully realized individuals. As a primary source, it illuminates how white Southerners remembered and constructed their past, while preserving cultural material that might otherwise have been lost.
