Dick the Bank Boy; Or, a Missing Fortune
In a small American town at the turn of the century, fourteen-year-old Dick Morrison trudges home along a dusty road, rehearsing the same desperate question: can anyone give a boy a job? His widowed mother is struggling, the rent is due, and Dick is determined to be the one who saves her, not the other way around. When wealthy, motorcycling Ferd Graylock rides up demanding the entire road, Dick refuses to yield, and a rivalry spanning years sparks again. But fate has a curious sense of humor. The very local bank where Dick finally finds work becomes the stage for a mystery, a fortune has vanished, and only a resourceful boy willing to dig beneath the surface might uncover the truth. This is adventure in knickerbockers: a story where courage matters more than wealth, where a working-class kid tangles with secrets the town's adults have overlooked, and where determination turns hardship into opportunity.
