Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) is a German opera composed by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1843. The opera tells the story of a cursed sailor, the Flying Dutchman, who can only find redemption through the true love of a woman. The narrative unfolds as Norwegian captain Daland encounters the ghostly ship of the Dutchman during a storm and agrees to introduce him to his daughter Senta, who is determined to save him from his eternal curse. This work is notable for its early use of leitmotifs and its innovative structure, breaking from traditional operatic forms.
