Comrade Yetta

In the cramped backrooms of a Lower East Side bookshop, a girl named Yetta Rayefsky discovers that words have power. Her father Benjamin sells used books to the neighborhood's garment workers, immigrants who pour their exhaustion into endless seams. Through secondhand Dickens and Zola, Yetta learns to read the world itself: its cruelties, its possibilities. When mob violence leaves Benjamin dying and Yetta thrust into the brutal air of a sweat-shop, she must choose between the quiet life of books her father imagined for her and the fight raging around her. The novel pulses with the early tremors of labor organizing, capturing a moment when immigrant women began to demand that their hands were worth more than starvation wages. This is a story of awakening: not just to injustice, but to the terrifying, exhilarating possibility of fighting back.
