Color
1925

In 1925, a young poet published his debut collection and staked his claim as the voice of a generation. Countee Cullen's 'Color' is a masterwork of the Harlem Renaissance, where every poem calibrates the weight of being Black in America against the vastness of human longing. 'Yet Do I Marvel' wrestles with God and suffering in a voice that refuses easy comfort. 'Heritage' asks what Africa means to a man three centuries removed from it, and finds the question unanswerable, beautiful, and devastating. Then comes 'Incident', eight lines that capture a whole childhood in a white man's cruelty. Cullen wrote with formal elegance and emotional precision, refusing to let anyone dictate what Black poetry should sound like. He quoted Keats in the same breath as he documented racial violence. This collection captures a young artist navigating between worlds that both claim and reject him, finding in poetry not resolution but a way to survive intact.
