Christopher Quarles: College Professor and Master Detective

Professor Christopher Quarles occupies a peculiar niche in detective fiction: a philosopher who solves crimes. When young detective Wigan arrives at Blenholm Square to investigate the suspicious death of Mr. Ratcliffe, found dead in his study with a sapphire and strange ivory boxes as the only clues, he encounters Quarles almost by accident. The professor's methods are unconventional, rooted not in police procedure but in logical deduction and psychological insight. The pair form an unlikely partnership, with the academic's intellectual rigor complementing the younger man's street smarts. The novel excels in its intellectual puzzle-box structure, each clue requiring philosophical reasoning rather than brute force to decipher. Though the prose reflects its 1914 origins, the concept of the amateur academic detective predating Sherlock Holmes's intellectual heirs makes this a fascinating period piece for readers interested in the genre's evolution.
