Six people. Six versions of the same haunted night. In Lanoe Falconer's remarkably modern 1891 novel, the rationalist Sir George Atherley and his wife take residence at Atherley Manor, only to be unsettled by mysterious sounds from the servants' wing. Is it a ghost, or merely the creaking of an old house? The answer never quite matters as much as what each character's interpretation reveals about them. A man still wounded by a broken engagement sees ghosts everywhere in loss. A wife watches her husband's steadfast rationalism crumble. Servants whisper of hysteria. Each perspective contradicts the last, not to solve the mystery but to deepen it, until the reader understands that belief itself is the true haunting. Falconer writes with a cool, precise elegance that makes the uncanny feel inevitable, and her psychological acuity predates the modernist fascination with fractured perception by decades. This is ghost story as epistemological puzzle: not what is there, but what do we need to see?
