In the sweltering Philippines, after cholera has swept through and taken its dead, a group of expatriate teachers gather to judge a man they let die. Miller was mean, they say. A coward. Unworthy of knowing. But Carter, in a furious all-night confession, demands they reckon with what they never bothered to learn: the loneliness that broke him, the compromises survival demanded, the man behind the reputation. As the Christmas candles burn low in Ilo-Ilo, Hopper dismantles the comfortable certainties of moral judgment, exposing how easily we condemn what we refuse to understand. This is a novel about the violence of presumption, the isolation of foreignness, and the terrible gap between how we appear to others and what we suffer alone. It asks whether compassion is possible when survival is at stake, and whether the dead deserve more than the easy verdicts of the living.
