Cap'n Dan's Daughter

Cap'n Dan Dott traded the salt spray and the wheelhouse for a dry goods store in the little town of Trumet, and he can't say it's been a fair trade. The sea gave him purpose; the shop gives him worry. His daughter Gertrude is about to leave for her final year of college, and his wife Serena manages the household and her husband's flagging fortunes with a practicality that borders on heroism. When a letter arrives announcing the death of Dan's wealthy Aunt Lavinia, hinting at a considerable inheritance, hope flickers in the embers of the Dott household. But sudden wealth, as any old Cape Codder knows, brings its own tempests: small-town gossip, shifting social tides, and thequestion of whether the Dotts have truly changed enough to deserve their good fortune. Lincoln writes with an affectionate eye for the rhythms of coastal New England life, capturing the humor and heart of neighbors who are equal parts meddling and kind. It's a gentle story about what we hold onto and what we let go, wrapped in the warmth of a world where everyone knows your name and your business.
