Bentley's Miscellany, Volume II

Bentley's Miscellany, Volume II captures a remarkable moment in literary history: the 1837 launch of Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist, serialized within these very pages. Edited by the twenty-five-year-old Dickens under his pseudonym Boz, this volume pulses with the energy of a writer remaking the novel form. The opening scenes are electric: young Oliver, fresh from the workhouse, awakens in the den of the menacing Fagin, a criminal mastermind who trains children to steal. Around this central narrative, the Miscellany gathers essays, poetry, and short fiction from various contributors, creating a rich portrait of mid-Victorian popular culture. Dickens's editor's preface addresses readers with confidence, building on the previous year's success while promising new pleasures ahead. This is periodical literature at its most vital, capturing a world where a young orphan's moral innocence must navigate the corrupting pressures of London's criminal underworld.
