Barbara Lynn: A Tale of the Dales and Fells.

In the windswept valleys of Yorkshire, a young woman tends to an elderly relation who holds the keys to her future - and her past. Barbara Lynn is twenty-one, full of secret ambitions that feel like sins in the cramped house at Greystones, where her great-grandmother Mistress Annas Lynn rules with iron will and tightly clasped purse strings. The old woman remembers a world before machines, before the railways came, before anything changed in the Dales - and she intends to keep it that way, even as time presses against the walls of the farmhouse. What begins as a study of generational friction becomes something richer: a meditation on what we inherit, not just from blood but from landscape, from silence, from the weight of those who came before us. Jenkinson writes with quiet authority about the hard economics of rural life - who owns the land, who works it, who inherits - while never losing sight of the young heart that aches for something unnamed. This is a novel about the price of staying and the cost of leaving, set against the brutal beauty of the northern English countryside.
