Banked Fires

E. W. Savi

British Literature, Novels

The heat lies heavy over Bengal, and beneath it, everything smolders. E.W. Savi's forgotten masterpiece opens on a young British couple pitching their tents in the scorched earth of remote colonial India, and from the first page, you feel the strain: Magistrate Meredith and his wife Joyce, both barely out of England, both drowning in responsibilities they never asked for. Their infant is sick. The isolation is crushing. And Joyce must navigate motherhood in a place where every comfort has been stripped away, her romantic ideals of married life dissolving into exhaustion and quiet despair. This is colonial India stripped of romance. Savi writes with sharp precision about what the empire actually cost not just the colonized, but the colonizers themselves: their marriages, their sanity, their sense of self. Joyce is neither victim nor heroine. She is something more interesting: a woman caught between what she was promised and what she actually lives, learning that the "civilizing" mission was always a lie. The marriage becomes a crucible where colonial pressures melt away pretense. What remains is raw, uncomfortable, and utterly compelling. The title "banked fires" is perfect: these are embers that refuse to go out, passions and resentments barely contained, always threatening to reignite.
