Ballades and Verses Vain

Andrew Lang wrote these poems in an age that still believed formal beauty could hold back mortality. The ballades, with their strict triplet structure and envoi, become vessels for feelings that might otherwise spill uncontrolled. The "vain" verses of the title are playfully self-aware - love poems that know love ends, seasonal poems that know spring returns only to depart again. Yet there's no bitterness in this acceptance, only wit, grace, and a kind of heroic composure in the face of time's passage. Lang invokes the entire tradition of European verse - the troubadours, the sonneteers, the French forms - not as academic exercise but as living conversation with the past. These are poems to read aloud, to memorize, to give to someone you wish to impress with your tenderness. They make the reader feel cultured without being pedantic, emotional without being unmanly.
