Anno Domini 2000; Or, Woman's Destiny

In 1889, a former Prime Minister of New Zealand wrote a science fiction novel imagining the year 2000, a world where women hold power and men have become the 'gentler sex.' The result is one of the strangest, most oddly prescient books ever written by a statesman. The novel opens with George Claude Sonsius, a man ruined by poverty and despair, whose tragedy sparks a social revolution. Fast-forward to the year 2000: the British Empire has transformed into a federation where women dominate politics, commerce, and culture. Hilda Fitzherbert, a brilliant parliamentarian, navigates this utopian world while resisting romantic pressure from Lord Reginald Paramatta, who longs for her hand but cannot compete with her ambition. What makes this book remarkable isn't just its predictions, New Zealand did become the first nation to grant women suffrage, and would later be governed almost entirely by women, but its sheer audacity. Vogel, writing as a Victorian politician, placed women's liberation not as tragedy but as progress. The prose may be dated, the politics naive in places, but the premise remains intoxicating: a world built by women, told from a future that almost was.
