American Literature, Novels

In 1914 Oldburgh, a genteel Southern town where a woman's name carries the weight of ancestral expectation, a mother makes a daring choice at her daughter's christening: she names the child Grace. Not Grace after a beloved relative, but Grace the virtue itself, as if daring the world to hold this girl to an impossible standard. Grace Christie grows up beneath the disapproving gaze of aunts and relatives who see her name as prophecy and burden. Her dual heritage, the Christies and the Moores, two families with rival expectations, divides her loyalties before she even understands what she owes to either. When she dares to want more than the prescribed paths of wifehood or genteel labor, she discovers that virtue, in the South of this era, is less a quality to cultivate than a cage to inhabit. Sharber's forgotten novel captures something many more famous Southern works miss: the specific anguish of a woman who must perform goodness while never being allowed to define it herself. Grace's quest for a creative life becomes a quiet rebellion, her name both trap and aspiration. For readers who crave early feminist literature wrapped in period charm, this is a novel about the radical act of claiming your own meaning.
