All's Not Gold That Glitters;" Or, The Young Californian

The California Gold Rush has ignited a fever across America. When Mr. Gilman catches the gold bug and departs for the mines with his eager young son Sam, he leaves behind his practical wife and their quiet farm life. What begins as an adventure filled with promise quickly tests everything this family holds together. The glittering dream of gold confronts the harder realities of greed, separation, and the slow corrosion of moral character. Young Sam must navigate between his father's mounting ambition and the steady values his mother has instilled from home. Alice B. Haven writes with earnest urgency for young readers, using the Gold Rush as both backdrop and metaphor for life's temptings. The title itself promises the moral truth at the heart of this story: not everything that shines is worth pursuing. This is didactic 19th-century adventure fiction at its core, a cautionary tale about what families lose when they chase riches over relationships.
