American Literature, Novels

The neighbors cannot stop watching Mrs. Carville. When she arrives in their suburban American community with her foreign ways and her mysterious absence of a husband, they dissect her every habit: the Italian heating device on her wall, the way she keeps to herself, the questions she won't answer. Their fascination masquerades as neighborliness, but underneath runs something darker: the urgent need to categorize, to judge, to feel superior to an enigma they cannot solve. As speculation mounts about her connection to a shadowy man, each neighbor reveals their own aspirations, prejudices, and secret failings through their theories about the woman next door. McFee wrote this novel in the early twentieth century, when immigration was reshaping American suburbs and making familiar spaces strange. What begins as gentle gossip curdles into something more uncomfortable: a portrait of how easily community becomes surveillance, and how the alien among us reflects back our own uncertainties about belonging.

“door, something neither English nor American. "What do you think!" she exclaimed, coming in one morning as I was busy writing. "She's got a little iron grate on legs, and there's charcoal burning in it." "Who? Where?" I asked, coming out””
