Alice in Blunderland: An Iridescent Dream

Imagine Alice tumbling not into Wonderland, but into Blunderland: a city where the government owns everything, regulates everything, and has somehow made absolute nonsense of the very idea of progress. John Kendrick Bangs, writing in 1907, crafted a satirical masterpiece that feels less like period curiosity and more like leaked documents from next week. The town employs an official beggar on salary. Citizens face arrest if they decline to dance with the less attractive. The transit system is marvelously efficient, because it goes nowhere at all. Teeth are public property. And the poets! Fourteen thousand of them, composing verse by civic decree, forced into rhyme by men with clipboards. When Alice encounters her old Wonderland friends now running this municipal nightmare, she watches in horror as they debate the going rate for voting rights and the proper management of children. The satire cuts deep: Bangs understood that bureaucratic absurdity doesn't require malice, only the sincere application of foolish principles. This is Animal Farm written by someone who actually read the policy proposals. For anyone who's ever looked at a government program and thought, 'This cannot be real,' Bangs offers dark comfort: someone saw it coming over a century ago.
