Alamo Ranch: A Story of New Mexico

The clear, dry air of New Mexico's Mesilla Valley draws a fragile community to Alamo Ranch, a health resort where invalids from across the country gather to escape their ailments. Among them is Leon Starr, whose irrepressible optimism and resourcefulness lift the spirits of his fellow boarders as they navigate the uncertain terrain between sickness and recovery. A jovial Irish minister and a scholarly archaeologist conducting excavations in the surrounding hills add color and argument to the ranch's sunny porches and tranquil grounds. Warner Brooks captures something precious in these pages: the way shared vulnerability forges bonds more lasting than any cure, and how the act of simply living together, of laughing at small absurdities and bearing each other's disappointments, becomes its own form of healing. This is a gentle book, unapologetically warm, but it possesses the quiet power to remind readers that refuge can be found in unexpected places.
