Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (Volume II)

Volume II plunges deeper into the misadventures of Peregrine Pickle, that most insufferable of eighteenth-century dandies, as he waltzes through English society armed with nothing but immense self-regard and remarkably poor judgment. Smollett constructs the novel as a dazzling cascade of episodes: each chapter delivers a new scrape, a fresh humiliation, another阶梯 of hubris before the inevitable fall. Through Peregrine's exploits, we witness the grotesque carnival of Georgian England, its rakish aristocrats, its scheming social climbers, its quacks and confidence men. Yet the novel's most audacious flourish lies embedded within: "The Memoirs of a Lady of Quality," the scandalous autobiography of Frances Vane, Viscountess Vane, a woman whose public love affairs convulsed society and whose frank recounting of desire and betrayal still startles three centuries later. This is picaresque fiction at its most sprawling and subversive, a novel that mocks pretension while revelling in the very excess it satirizes.
