Mrs. Inchbald

1791

British Literature, Novels

In 1791, Elizabeth Inchbald composed a novel so emotionally radical it went into a second edition within weeks. The story begins in scandal: Miss Milner, a beautiful heiress raised to value nothing but her charms, falls desperately in love with her guardian, Dorriforth, a Catholic priest bound by vows of celibacy. She pursues him with a boldness that shocks even as it compels. But Inchbald's true daring emerges in the novel's second half, which follows their daughter Matilda, a young woman of quiet virtue whom Dorriforth has rejected out of grief for his wife's moral failings. The contrast between frivolous mother and virtuous daughter is Inchbald's pointed critique of women's "fashionable" education, which prized beauty and sensibility over moral substance. The prose has the subtlety of Jane Austen, but with an emotional intensity Austen would later soften. This is a novel about passion, restraint, and the devastating cost when women are taught to perform rather than to think. It endures because it asks a question still relevant: what do we owe the people we love, and what do we owe ourselves?
