A Select Collection of Old English Plays, Volume 05

These are the plays that taught Shakespeare how to haunt an audience. Volume 5 of Dodsley's influential anthology gathers the raw, violent, darkly comic works that defined Elizabethan and Jacobean theater before it learned to be polite. At its heart sits 'The Spanish Tragedy,' the revenge masterpiece that gave Hamlet his template: a grieving father (the Marshal Hieronimo) driven to madness and bloodletting as the ghost of Andrea looks on, demanding justice for a murder committed in war. The play drips with theatrical self-awareness, characters who know they're performing, a play-within-a-play before Hamlet invented the concept. Around it, the collection offers comedies sharp enough to draw blood, histories that blur the line between propaganda and drama, and lesser-known works by the era's most daring writers. This is theater in its adolescence: filthy, ambitious, unapologetically interested in power, sex, and what people owe each other when everyone has been betrayed. For anyone who thinks they know where Shakespeare came from, these are the actual bones.
