A Select Collection of Old English Plays, Volume 02

These are the ancestors of English drama, the plays that came before Shakespeare gave the form its immortal voice. Compiled in the 18th century from 16th-century texts, this collection gathers early moral interludes where abstract virtues and vices take human form and battle for a soul. Here Charity argues with Youth. Here Pride and Riot tempt the wayward. Here every character is a lesson, every scene a mirror held up to an audience asking: which path will you choose? The dramatic conflicts between personified qualities, Humility versus Pride, Reason versus Appetite, create theatrical debates that were once performed in Tudor England for audiences hungry for moral entertainment. These are not sophisticated works in the way later Elizabethan drama would be, but they possess a raw, earnest energy that feels startlingly modern: people grappling with the same temptations and regrets that consume us still. For anyone curious about where English theater began, or anyone who finds something magnetic in watching ideas collide on stage, these plays offer a window into a world that invented the moral drama we still recognize today.
