Sir William Evergreen has made a fortunate match: Margery, a country girl with warmth, wit, and a sizeable fortune. But there's a problem. He wants to transform her into a proper lady, and every lesson in refinement erupts into glorious disaster. Table manners become catastrophes. Musical performances devolve into chaos. The London friends she must charm remain entirely unimpressed, while Sir William's well-meaning efforts to polish his rough diamond leave him increasingly bewildered. Buckstone's 1847 comic gem pokes gentle fun at the absurdity of social pretension. Sir William isn't cruel, merely deluded; Margery isn't foolish, simply authentic. The comedy lives in the gap between his vision of elegance and her delightful inability to conform to it. Yet beneath the humor lies something sharper: a defense of natural goodness against the tyranny of respectability, a theme that still resonates. The play endures because Margery's quiet rebellion feels earned rather than performed. She doesn't reject refinement out of spite; she simply refuses to be less than herself. For readers who enjoy Victorian comedy of manners, social satire with heart, or plays that champion authenticity over artifice, this one-act wonder offers fifty minutes of sharp, warm entertainment.
