A New Sensation

Albert Ross

American Literature, Humour, Novels

A New Sensation opens with Donald Camran, a man convalescing from illness and disillusionment, slumped in his armchair while his friends urge him to seek a 'new sensation' to restore his zest for life. When his engagement ends in rejection, Donald does something radically unconventional for the 1890s: he places an advertisement for a female traveling companion, a 'typewriter' who will assist with his writing and accompany him to the Caribbean. The novel unfolds through the letters that arrive in response, each applicant revealing a different vision of womanhood, ambition, and possibility. Donald's candid, self-deprecating narration carries the reader through his whimsical quest while subtly excavating the loneliness and stagnation that plague a generation trapped between Victorian certainties and modern desires. Albert Ross wrote this novel with sharp humor and surprising tenderness, chronicling one man's attempt to escape the confines of expectation while navigating the treacherous waters of potential romance.
