A Little Maid of Province Town

In 1774 Province Town, eight-year-old Anne Nelson is trying to belong somewhere after losing her father at sea. She finds shelter with kind Mistress Stoddard, but the community calls her a "spy's daughter", taunts that wound an already grieving child. The Revolutionary War brews on the horizon, but for Anne, the real battle is simpler: finding friends in a place that suspects her family of treason. Alice Turner Curtis writes with quiet tenderness about a girl who musters courage despite her fears, learning that resilience sometimes means simply getting up each day and trying again. This is historical fiction that understands how children experience big historical moments, through small slights, small kindnesses, and the quiet work of growing up. Young readers who enjoy historical adventures with emotional depth will find a quiet heroine worth rooting for.
