A Life Sentence: A Novel

The trial of Andrew Westwood has concluded. The jury has spoken. Now his young daughter Jenny must face a world that has already decided her father's guilt, and by extension, hers. Set in late Victorian England, this novel traces the devastating ripple effects of one man's conviction for murder through the eyes of the child left to bear its weight. As Westwood awaits execution, Jenny finds herself orphaned while her father still lives: shunted between relatives, whispered about by neighbors, marked by a disgrace she is too young to understand. Sergeant writes with clear-eyed compassion about the particular cruelty of Victorian society's treatment of the innocent families of the condemned. The novel asks whether justice truly ends with the scaffold, or whether it continues to exact its toll on those who never stood accused. What elevates this overlooked gem is its refusal to offer easy comfort. This is a story about the marks that public shame leaves on private hearts, and the question of whether a child's love can survive the shadow of the gallows.
