A History of English Literature: A Practical Text-Book

First published in 1923, this textbook offers a sweeping journey through a thousand years of English literary history, beginning with the mysterious Old English period where Beowulf's anonymous poet moved through shadowy manuscripts. Edward Albert writes with genuine enthusiasm for his subject, making the case that literature doesn't exist in isolation but emerges from the specific historical moments that shape its authors. The book traces the evolution from early Germanic oral traditions through the Latin influences of the medieval church, the flourishing of vernacular literature, and into the literary movements that would define the modern era. What distinguishes this volume from drier academic treatments is Albert's commitment to lively prose and his belief that understanding where literature came from deepens our appreciation of what it achieves. For students encountering the sweep of English literary history for the first time, this remains a solid, well-organized foundation that illuminates how the nation's stories and voices developed across centuries.
