A Girl of Virginia

At the University of Virginia in the early 1900s, Frances Holloway moves through campus with a wit that startles and a spirit that refuses to be contained. The daughter of a scholar, she has been raised on classical books and fierce independence, yet she navigates a world that expects young women to be decorative rather than daring. When scarlet leaves fall from a vine-wrapped pillar and a young man catches one against his heart as if it were a message, we understand the world this novel inhabits: one where every glance carries weight, every gesture drips with meaning, and love unfolds in the charged space between spoken words and bold silence. Frances banter with the young men who circle her reveals a mind that refuses easy categories. She is rooted in her Southern heritage yet hungry for something the old traditions cannot name. Through her, Lucy M. Thruston crafts a quietly radical portrait of a woman who knows exactly who she is, even as the world tries to tell her who she should become. The novel hums with the particular electricity of early courtship codes, the thrill of intelligent conversation between equals, and the ache of wanting both freedom and belonging.
