A Christmas Accident and Other Stories

In these warmly observed tales from the late 1800s, Annie Eliot Trumbull captures the small dramas of everyday life with wit and tender precision. The centerpiece, "A Christmas Accident," pairs the irascible wealthy Mr. Gilton against his lively neighbors, the Biltons, a large and loving family whose modest circumstances stand in stark contrast to his cold estate. A long-simmering feud over a poisoned dog has硬化 the animosity between these two households living in identical homes, until Christmas Eve brings an unexpected collision. Mistaken for Santa Claus, the gruff Mr. Gilton stumbles into the Bilton home and encounters something he never expected: genuine warmth, chaos, children, and the possibility of grace. These stories explore what happens when pride meets generosity, when class walls meet human need, and when the holiday season forces us to see our neighbors as they truly are. Trumbull writes with sharp social insight disguised as gentle Victorian prose, revealing how easily strangers might become friends if only they'd let themselves be caught in someone else's doorway.
