A Case in Camera

Philip Esdaile has just achieved everything a young painter could want: elected Associate of the Royal Academy, his early masterworks reclaimed from years of poverty and struggle. On the morning his friend Billy Mackwith delivers those rescued canvases, the sky itself seems to congratulate him. Then a parachute crashes through the studio roof, and the celebration dies. One aviator is dead. The other may yet live. And Esdaile knows more about the accident than he is telling. What follows is a tightly wound study of what happens when a man's carefully constructed life meets the weight of secrets kept. The warmth between friends curdles into suspicion. Loyalty bends. The painter who captured light so brilliantly finds himself in darkness, navigating a mystery that may have no clean solution, only choices with consequences he cannot undo. Oliver Onions writes with the precision of a man who understands that the most dangerous crimes are the ones we commit quietly, in the spaces between trust and self-preservation.
