Colonel Samuel Barton was a pivotal figure in the early settlement of Nashville, Tennessee, and a notable Patriot during the American Revolution. Born in Virginia, he became an apprentice at a young age, and family lore suggests that he was left to fend for himself when his father disappeared at sea. His military career began with his participation in Lord Dunmore's War in 1774, where he fought as a ranger against Native American tribes. When the American Revolution erupted, Barton joined the 7th Virginia Regiment, serving as a sergeant in Morgan's Rifles, renowned for their sharpshooting skills. His experiences as an explorer and frontiersman made him an exemplary soldier, and he played a crucial role in the Revolutionary War effort. After the war, Barton returned to Tennessee, then part of North Carolina, where he contributed significantly to the establishment of Fort Nashborough, the precursor to Nashville. He was a land trader, acquiring and selling land grants awarded for military service. In 1780, he co-signed the Cumberland Compact, an informal constitution that governed the settlement until Tennessee achieved statehood in 1796. Barton's legacy is marked by his leadership in the early governance of the region and his contributions to the community, as evidenced by his involvement in the Tribunal of Notables, a governing body of local leaders. His life and work exemplified the spirit of the American frontier and the foundational efforts that shaped Nashville's development.
