Robert Shackleton

Robert Shackleton was a prominent English philologist and librarian, known for his significant contributions to the study of the French language and literature. Born in Todmorden, West Riding of Yorkshire, he pursued his education at Oriel College, Oxford, where he later became a faculty member. Shackleton taught French at Brasenose College from 1946 to 1966, during which time he also served as the college librarian, shaping the academic environment and resources available to students and scholars alike. In 1966, Shackleton was appointed Bodley's Librarian, overseeing the prestigious Bodleian Library until 1979. His tenure was marked by efforts to enhance the library's collections and accessibility, solidifying its reputation as a leading research institution. In addition to his administrative roles, he held the Lyell Readership in Bibliography in 1983-84, where he lectured on the bibliographical history of Montesquieu, further showcasing his expertise and passion for literature.
