Mildred Stapley Byne was an influential American art historian renowned for her expertise in Spanish art and architecture. Alongside her husband, Arthur Byne, she contributed significantly to the academic study of Spanish colonial architecture and ironwork, producing some of the earliest scholarly works in English on these subjects. Her career took off with the publication of her essay "The Great Queen Isabel" in Harper's Monthly Magazine in 1912, which showcased her ability to engage with historical themes in an accessible manner. Byne's most notable work, the biography "Christopher Columbus," was groundbreaking in its incorporation of new research from Spanish sources, making it a vital resource for English-speaking audiences. The book saw remarkable success, with seventeen editions published from 1915 to 2012, reflecting its lasting impact on the field. Throughout her career, Byne was recognized for her contributions to the Hispanic Society of America, where she served as a curator of architecture and applied arts. After leaving the society in 1921, she and her husband settled in Madrid, where they continued their scholarly pursuits, solidifying Byne's legacy as a pioneering figure in the study of Spanish art and history.
