John Gregorson Campbell was a Scottish folklorist and Free Church minister known for his dedication to preserving the oral traditions of Scotland. Serving in the Tiree and Coll parishes in Argyll, he faced challenges in his ministry due to ill health and criticism from parishioners regarding his preaching style. Despite these setbacks, Campbell's passion for folklore led him to become the Secretary of the Ossianic Society at Glasgow University in the mid-1850s, where he actively collected and documented traditional stories from the Scottish Gaelic-speaking community. His significant contributions to folklore culminated in the publication of several compendiums of tales, with three released posthumously. Campbell's meticulous transcription of legends, often recorded in the original dialects as spoken by the narrators, showcased the richness of Scottish oral traditions. His work not only preserved these stories for future generations but also highlighted the cultural heritage of Scotland, solidifying his legacy as a key figure in the field of folklore studies.
