Harold Benjamin Fantham

Harold Benjamin Fantham was a prominent zoologist and parasitologist known for his groundbreaking research on coccidian parasites. He studied at University College, London, the Royal College of Science, and Christ's College, Cambridge, where he became a research fellow. His academic career included teaching and research positions in London, Cambridge, and Liverpool, before he was appointed professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of the Witswatersrand. In 1933, he took on the role of professor of zoology at McGill University in Montreal, where he continued to make significant contributions to the field until his untimely death from sepsis at the age of 60. Fantham's most notable achievement was his detailed description of the life cycle of the coccidian parasite Eimeria avium, which he published in 1910. This work was pivotal in understanding the disease it caused in young grouse, marking him as the first parasitologist to elucidate its complex life cycle, including the phases of sporogony, schizogony, and gametogony. His research not only advanced the field of parasitology but also addressed practical concerns in wildlife management, particularly in relation to grouse populations in Scotland. Additionally, Fantham was an advocate of eugenics during the 1920s, contributing to discussions on this controversial topic. His legacy lies in his contributions to zoology and parasitology, which continue to influence the study of avian diseases today.
