Alberto Santos-Dumont

Alberto Santos-Dumont was a pioneering Brazilian aeronaut and inventor who played a crucial role in the early development of both lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air aircraft. Born into a wealthy coffee-producing family, he moved to Paris, where he dedicated his life to aeronautical innovation. Santos-Dumont gained international fame in 1901 when he won the Deutsch prize by flying around the Eiffel Tower in his airship No. 6, marking a significant achievement in aviation history. His groundbreaking work continued with the development of fixed-wing aircraft, culminating in the historic flights of the 14-bis in 1906, which were the first heavier-than-air flights officially recognized by an aeronautics recordkeeping body.
