Alanson M. Randol was a distinguished United States Army artillery officer whose military career spanned the tumultuous years of the American Civil War. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he entered service as a second lieutenant and quickly rose through the ranks due to his gallant and meritorious service. Randol played a pivotal role in nearly every major battle of the Eastern Theater, showcasing his expertise as an artillerist with the 1st U.S. Artillery. His leadership extended beyond artillery, as he commanded the volunteer 2nd New York Cavalry Regiment during critical engagements, including the historic surrender of General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. After the war, Randol returned to the Regular Army, where he continued to serve with distinction, commanding various companies of the 1st U.S. Artillery in garrison duties across the United States. His contributions to military strategy and artillery tactics during a pivotal era in American history solidified his legacy as a respected officer. Randol's life was cut short by kidney disease in 1887, but his impact on the military landscape of his time remains noteworthy, reflecting the dedication and courage of those who served during one of the nation's most challenging periods.
