In the grimy shadows of Lavender Terrace, a boy holds the line. Gus Rew and his father Augustus Carruthers, once gentlefolk, now share a rented room surrounded by dust and debt. The elder Carruthers drinks to forget his fall from grace, leaving Gus to navigate a world that smells of coal smoke and contempt. Yet the boy has made a promise: he will behave as a gentleman should, even when his threadbare coat invites mockery, even when the other boys see only a pauper's son.
