Witching Hill

The supernatural invades the respectable English suburb in this eerie collection of eight interlinked tales. When young Gillon takes a position as clerk at the newly built Witching Hill Estate, he expects tedious paperwork managing tenants in this model of modern suburban life. His mundane existence fractures when the enigmatic Delavoye arrives, a neighbor whose obsession with the macabre and local history proves infectious. Together they investigate strange occurrences: a depression in the lawn that resembles a sunken grave, tunnels beneath the estate, and the lingering shadow of the notorious Lord Mulcaster. What begins as rational inquiry gradually surrenders to something older and darker, as the respectable facades of Edwardian suburbia crack to reveal buried horrors. Hornung, better known for his Raffles criminal tales, brings the same sly intelligence to these stories of the uncanny. He understands that the most disturbing supernatural threats wear the mask of ordinary life. For fans of M.R. James, Edwardian ghost stories, and anyone who suspects that modern life rests on very thin soil.
