Witch-Doctors

A German colonial officer schemes to control a remote African kingdom by weaponizing its own spiritual beliefs in this gripping early 20th-century novel. Colonel zu Pfeiffer operates from an outpost near Victoria Nyanza, viewing the indigenous population with contempt while plotting to manipulate their witch-doctors and religious traditions as tools of empire. But the tribal leaders, including the formidable King-God MFunya MPopo, are not passive figures; they navigate the dangerous terrain between colonial ambition and ancient power, wielding magic and superstition as both shield and weapon. The novel crackles with tension as these forces collide, exploring how belief itself becomes a battlefield where cultures clash and identities dissolve. Beadle writes with surprising nuance for the era, depicting the psychological warfare between occupier and occupied with an urgency that makes the political machinations feel immediate and dangerous. The result is a provocative snapshot of empire at its most vulnerable point: where the colonizer must depend on the very people he despises to maintain his hold on power.
