William Blake: A Critical Essay

In 1868, a young Algernon Charles Swinburne, himself a poet of furious gifts, set out to rescue William Blake from centuries of neglect and ridicule. The result is less a formal critique than a fevered act of advocacy: a portrait of the visionary poet-painter as a lone radical against a hostile world, his spiritual visions dismissed as madness, his illuminated manuscripts as the work of a lunatic. Swinburne draws on Blake's entire corpus, from the apocalyptic 'Jerusalem' to the playful 'Songs of Innocence,' arguing that what contemporaries mistook for chaos was in fact a coherent, revolutionary philosophy of imagination. The essay pulses with Swinburne's own Romantic fervor as he champions an artist who died in obscurity, unrecognized by the institutions he defied. Reading it now, one encounters both Blake's extraordinary genius and the crucial role critics play in resurrecting the forgotten. This is essential for anyone interested in how we come to canonical writers, and how a passionate argument can change literary history.
